The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and its partners have embarked on a study of public transportation options for the corridor connecting Buffalo and Amherst. This could include an extension of Metro Rail, improvements to current bus service or something else altogether, like bus rapid transit. We do not know where the study is headed. We do know that together we can make getting around the region safer, more environmentally friendly and cost effective. So join us. The discussion starts here and now.

  1. Long story short: This plan sucks. (OPINION)

    Your BRT alts are completely ludicrous. You run in mixed traffic in the most congested areas, how does that make any sense? Buses stink (literally) and are noisy. Putting more of them down the same streets won't solve any quality of life issues, and will only add to congestion.

    The LRT option has a route that will serve more of Amherst/Brighton, but at the expense of a quick connection between UB Campuses. What about the Eastern half of the study area? The route is a bit convoluted, and I don't think our current equipment can make some of those turns!
    Also, is the LRT option an extension, with trains running through? I could see significant advantage of running through in terms of ridership, but it could be hard to obtain additional High-Level vehicles, as no domestic builders currently manufacture high-level LRVs.

    I am very disappointed at the lack of grade separation in all the alternatives, but of them the LRT seems to be the best. The tunnel under Bailey seems to be a good move, but why not the whole way to UB?

    I disagree with the idea that BRT will attract riders. I've seen places where it fails entirely. There is also the constant risk that, in some moment of fiscal crisis, the system will be downgraded. Think of all the routes NFTA has discontinued over the years.

    I hope some of this helps. Living in the area around UB North my whole life, I've noticed that this area has some of the worst traffic outside of the city.

    I know, deep down in my heart, that NFTA (being a state agency) is trying to short change WNY yet again. I see nothing of expected average speeds, but if it isn't at least 40 MPH, it won't be worth the expense, as no one will ride it

    I would love to be proved wrong, but I seriously don't believe that anything we say will influence how this project moves forward. NY seems to just do whatever they want, regardless of how the majority of those affected think.

Get BRT OUT!!! no one likes to take a bus, However much cheaper it is, it won't solve the congestion problem that exists within this corridor. the only sensible alternative is LRT I like the cut and cover method and I think that would work from university station to past the blvd. any other form of transit even with dedicated lanes, is not efficient and no matter how often a bus comes won't attract riders.

  5. Only real option is Light Rail via Niagara Falls Boulevard. Fastest single seat ride North Campus to Downtown. Has the most dedicated R/W. Most reliable in winter. Corridor IS competitive against other cities for State and Federal money. Let's use some of that Billion for Buffalo to advance this project. SUNY at Buffalo is the largest University in NY and one of the largest Universities in the US. North Campus to Cross Point's looks like that is Uniland and the Town of Amherst's part to advance.
